Sting Receives Chilean Medal

Sting has got decorated with the Gabriela Mistral Medal (named thus after the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner), the highest Chilean state award. The ceremony was attended by former Chilean dissidents and Isabel Alliende, the daughter of the President Salvador Alliende, ousted and killed by the Pinochets regime. Chilean Foreign Minister Soledad Alvear said that the musician got the award for defending human rights, informing the world about the situation in Chile during Gen. Augusto Pinochets dictatorship. The BBC noted in particular, that Sting participated in numerous charity concerts, and promoted his 1980s hit single They Dance Alone, dedicated to women whose husbands perished in Pinochets prisons. Sting said that he saw it as a coincidence that he received the medal at the time when the efforts were being made to try the ex-dictator for human rights abuses. 14.01.2001
